Holiday Decor Trends and Tips

Wow!  It’s already October and if your year has been anything like mine, thoughts of the holidays are just beginning to show signs of life.  Whether you are ready or not, they are fast approaching, so let’s have some fun!  As you start planning the holiday décor for your home, office or event, you may want to consider some of this year’s trends.  Doing so will enable you to create that modern, elegant or fashionable look you love.  Whether you are planning a small at home get together, an office gathering, or a large scale event, incorporating the right décor will make your occasion special.

Here are a few holiday décor ideas I think are really great for the upcoming season.

Pop Art

If you’re feeling bold, make your holiday décor all about color and modern details. Decorate walls with decal “peel and stick” art!  They are easy to use, low cost, and provide a new fresh look.

The snowy branches on a white artificial tree are the perfect backdrop to make brightly colored glass bulbs and baubles really stand out. Go for colors like fuchsia, apple green, lemon yellow, and turquoise.

When working with your florals, go for an extra “wow” factor by adding multi-colored bright meter balls inside your vase. The ornaments will magnify and really bring out the color.  Use bright colored lilies, roses and gerbera daisies that will play on the hues of your ornaments.

Natural and Rustic

Think rich woods and earth tones with accents of tree products including leaves, branches pinecones, acorns and bark.  You can always add splashes of brick red to this upscale, yet casual look.

This classic style can be elegant with the right touches.  Add a little sparkle and glitter to your florals.  Amaryllis, winterberry, lilies and holiday greens are seasonal holiday flowers that work great, along with pods, mosses, and grasses and other forest finds.  Wrapping a cylinder vase in Aspen bark instantly brings nature inside!

Touches of Turquoise

I was so excited when Pantone, the leading expert on color influence in the design world, announced Turquoise as the “Color of the Year.”  It is one of my favorites!  I decorated an entire room around two turquoise pillows this year.  So, as this year comes to an end, go ahead and incorporate splashes of turquoise into your décor.

Adding turquoise into a color palette brings a cool, fresh feeling.  It pairs well with just about any other color in the spectrum.  It also adds a splash of excitement to neutrals and browns and complements reds and pinks.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, states “Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing tropical waters and an escape from everyday troubles, while restoring our sense of well being.”  This is just the kind of feel good color we need to wrap up 2010!
