Floral Arrangement Care: A Little Goes Along Way

At the Amore Fiori stores in Denver, we go to great lengths to ensure our flowers are of the highest quality possible through our floral arrangement care.  This includes buying from local growers when we can, using wholesalers with the freshest supplies, and being fanatical about the preparation and storage of the products once they enter the store. This is something we pride ourselves on.  And frankly, this is one big difference setting us apart from large floral chains and grocery stores.  No one wants a dozen roses that are DOA and never open, not at any price.

Certain varieties of cut flowers last longer than others. Carnations and Daisies, for example, can remain vibrant for long periods and are popular in stores where care is not a priority.  Flowers such as Orchids, Lilies, Roses, Tulips, Irises, and Gerbera Daisies may naturally have a shorter vase life, but are prized for their beauty.  Whatever variety you choose, once you leave the store or receive your delivery, there are some very easy things you can do to keep them fresh and help add days to their beauty!

Location, Location, Location – Keep them in a cool spot (60 to 65 degrees F; 16 to 18 degrees C), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, direct drafts from a ceiling fan, and the tops of televisions or radiators. (Appliances like televisions give off heat, causing flowers to dry out).

Arrangements in Floral Foam – If arranged using floral foam, keep the foam soaked in water containing floral food provided by your florist.  Be sure to follow the directions on the package.

Arrangements in Water – Keep the vase filled with water containing floral food provided by your florist.  Be sure to follow the directions on the package.  If the solution becomes cloudy, replace it entirely.  Recut the stems every 3-4 days with a sharp knife, removing 1 inch from the bottom.  Cutting the stems at a slight angle will ensure they have plenty of surface area to absorb water and that they don’t sit flat on the bottom of the vase.  Also, remove leaves below the waterline.  Leaves in water will promote bacterial growth that can harm the flowers.

Woody Stems and Branches – When your arrangement contains woody stems (such as Quince, Forsythia, or Lilac) cut the stems with sharp pruning shears.  Place in warm water containing fresh floral food to promote flower opening.

Use Floral Food – Floral food is a combination of additives that help to nourish the flowers and discourage bacteria from growing in the water.  It is one of the best—and easiest—ways to extend the life of your flowers.  It is very important to follow the directions on the package correctly as improperly mixed floral food can do more harm than good.

When buying flowers, ask your florist how long you should expect the arrangement to last.  Most will tell you 3-5 days – demand more.  If the flowers are of a high quality, handled and processed properly, and cared for when they leave the store, they will retain their beauty longer and provide a greater value for your dollar.  So, whether it is a single stem Rose or a large arrangement in a vase, follow these simple tips for longer lasting, more beautiful flowers.
